Scenes From the Passenger Seat
This series consists entirely of photos taken on road trips across the U.S., between the Midwest and the West, shot through the car window—often at highway speeds—while my husband drove. I had no intention of doing a series. I just photographed out of interest and because my camera helps me see the world in new and novel ways. For a long time, these in-transit images sat largely unnoticed on my computer as I focused on photos from our destinations. It wasn’t until a friend asked what was new in my work that I really saw the photos and realized they spoke to me as a kind of visual journal of our time on the road and of parts of rural America.
